Forecasting Flooding in Austin
ARTICLE SPOTLIGHT: Disaster preparation
Completed in 2010, Austin’s Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) combines flood maps, real-time data, and predictive modeling to make better evacuation decisions and plans in response to imminent flooding. The new system can predict which streets will become flooded and impassable up to 6 hours beforehand and map flooded areas and road closures, replacing an old system that only displayed flood danger levels of locations and often caused evacuations to take place once flooding had already occurred.
